Tusculum to host spring football game Monday

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College football team's final scrimmage on Monday will also be the program's annual Spring Game, which will be held at the TC Indoor Practice Facility beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Pioneers have been divided into two evenly matched squads for Monday's Spring Game as honorary head coach coaches have also been selected. Coaching "Team Black" is Tusculum College CFO and Vice President of Finance Steve Gehret, while TC Dean of Students Dr. David McMahan will coach the "Team White" squad.

Tusculum conducted its second spring scrimmage this past Thursday afternoon as the Pioneers got in 107 plays, including numerous special situations such as Red Zone period (inside the opponent's 20-yard line) and inside the Tusculum five-yard line period. Tusculum head coach Frankie DeBusk was pleased with the amount of hustle plays made by the defense, but had some concerns with the ball security on offense.

"We made great strides from our first practice and first scrimmage to where we are today," said DeBusk. "I'm really proud of our team adjusting to this very physical and mental approach to this spring practice. Attention to detail, listening and receiving coaching, and trying to get better is what our team has accomplished to this point."

Leading the charge on defense was defensive end Jermaine Jennings, who accounted for three tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks, while defensive lineman David Little also had three stops, including a sack. Nose guard Fred Walker continued his solid performance in the spring with four tackles and two sacks, while linebacker Mason Fowler tallied four hits and two sacks.

Newcomers Clarence Laster and Aaron Cude accounted for solid outings. Laster led all players with five tackles, while Cude made three stops and posted an interception. Luke Harris recorded two tackles and a pair of pass break-ups, while Justin Arrington finished with two tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Offensively, rising sophomore quarterback Bo Cordell is thriving in spring drills, going 18-for-30 in Thursday's scrimmage with three touchdown tosses. Torrey Slaven went 7-for-10 in the air with a touchdown, while Mark Young went 5-of-8 for two scores. Eastern Kentucky University transfer signal caller went 4-of-6 in his second scrimmage in a Pioneer uniform.

Rashaad Carter hauled in six receptions, including three touchdowns, while Deonte' Gist also made six catches. Orlando Price accounted for four receptions while Jonathan Lyons, Daniel Herberth and Corey McCutcheon posted a touchdown reception each.
