Pioneers drop second leg of Florida trip with 8-1 loss at Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. --- Evan Wickeri and Joe Stella each had three-hit performances as the Barry University baseball team posted an 8-1 win over visiting Tusculum University Friday night at Feinbloom Field.

The Buccaneers (2-0), who defeated Lane College earlier in the day, remain undefeated on the young season. The Pioneers (0-2) went winless on Friday including a 2-1 loss at Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Barry out-hit Tusculum 13-4 in the game as Savi Delgado Kevin Noriega went 2-for-4 while also posted a pair of stolen bases. Wickeri and Stella each contributed two RBI apiece in the victory.

Four different players for the Pioneers finished with a base hit including Max Schmarder who belted a solo home run in the fourth inning to give Tusculum an early 1-0 lead.

Barry pitcher Frederico Zapata pitched 5.1 shutout innings to pick up the victory. Zapata (1-0) allowed one hit and recorded four strikeouts with zero walks.

Tusculum starter Seth Willis suffered the loss in his Pioneer debut as he allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Following Schmarder's home run in the fourth, the Bucs plated three runs in the bottom of the frame, which Wickeri tying the game with his RBI double and Stella followed with a two-run single.

Barry added a run in the fifth, two each in the sixth and eighth innings.

The Pioneers will close out the Florida road swing on Sunday for a 12 p.m. contest at Lynn University.
