Five Pioneers named to All-SAC baseball team

Five Pioneers named to All-SAC baseball team

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum College has placed five student-athletes on the 2015 All-South Atlantic Conference Baseball Team announced league officials Wednesday.

Pitchers Devan Watts and Placido Torres both earned All-SAC first team accolades, while Andrew Bowerman, Chris Waylock and Jeovanny Tolentino garnered honorable mention recognition.

Watts, a 6-0, 185-pound sophomore from Mooresville, North Carolina, was selected as the first team relief pitcher and currently leads the league with his 1.59 earned run average (19th in NCAA II) and his seven saves (21st in NCAA II). He leads the Pioneers with his 18 relief appearances where he has a 4-2 record in his 45.1 innings on the mound. The Mooresville High School graduate did not allow an earned run in his first 25 innings, covering a span of almost 10 games. Earlier this year, he pitched 8 2/3 shutout innings of relief in Tusculum's 13-inning win over Carson-Newman. For his efforts, he has been named the SAC Pitcher of the Week and Tennessee Sports Writers Association College Pitcher of the Week. Earlier this week, he was also listed as a national semifinalist for the Tino Martinez Award, which recognizes the NCAA Division II national player of the year at the end of the season.

Torres, a 5-11, 160-pound junior from North Brunswick, New Jersey, has emerged as the ace of TC's weekend rotation. The North Brunswick Township High School graduate has a 6-3 record with a 2.93 ERA which is seventh in the league. The ASA College transfer has recorded 87 strikeouts this year, which are fourth in the league and are two shy of matching a TC single-season record. Of his six victories, two have come against No. 11 Catawba and No. 13 Armstrong. He has made 14 appearances on the hill, including 11 starts where he has recorded 70 2/3 innings of work with 19 walks against his 87 strikeouts (4.58 strikeout/walk ratio). He pitched a two-hit shutout against Anderson last month and combined on a 4-0 shutout in the conference opener against Mars Hill in February.

Tolentino, a 5-8, 150-pound junior second baseman from Deltona, Florida, is batting .316 this year and has hit safely in his last 10 games. In his last 10 outings, he is batting .364 (12-of-33) and has also reached base safely in his last 20 games (Mar. 12-present). Since Mar. 12th, he has raised his average 116 points and is batting .378 in his last 20 contests on the diamond. The Trinity Christian Academy graduate has six doubles, two home runs, 19 RBI and four stolen bases.

Waylock, a 6-0, 180-pound senior shortstop, leads Tusculum in batting average (.361 - 13th in SAC), hits (52) and fielding assists (101). The Cary, Illinois native has recorded six sacrifice bunts this year, which are the sixth most in the league and his 16 multiple hit games are best on the team. In his 40 outings, he has tallied six doubles, 21 RBI and three stolen bases.

In his 88-game career at Tusculum, Waylock has a .323 batting average with 96 hits, 15 doubles, one home run and 43 RBI. His 17 career sacrifice bunts are seventh in the TC record book.

Bowerman, a 6-0, 185-pound senior outfielder, enters the conference postseason has one of the hottest hitters in the league. The Maryville, Tennessee product has a .360 batting average while riding a 16-game hitting streak (Mar. 27-present). During the hitting streak, he has raised his average 114 points and is batting .468 (30-of-64) in those 16 games. The Maryville High School graduate has also reached base safely in 24 consecutive games and finished the regular season with a 14-game hitting streak in conference contests. On Feb. 11 against Young Harris, he became the first player in the modern era of Tusculum baseball to hit for the cycle.

Bowerman has a .311 career batting average in his 158 games at Tusculum. He has been credited with 105 hits, 16 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 45 RBI and 19 stolen bases.

Tusculum will be the No. 3 seed at this week's South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Lincoln Memorial University on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The eight-team tournament is being held at McNair Field in Forest City, North Carolina.

The Pioneers (27-16) have clinched the program's 15th consecutive winning season and need three more victories to post its 13th straight 30-win campaign.
