Tusculum baseball drops doubleheader at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- Taylor Fennewald went 6-for-7 on the day to lead the Coker College baseball team to sweep of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over visiting Tusculum College Saturday afternoon.

The Cobras (13-22, 6-15) rallied from early deficits in both games to win the opener 13-5 and capture the night-cap 4-3 to win the weekend series two games to one.

Game 1: Coker 13, Tusculum 5 (Box Score)

Coker scored 13 unanswered runs and finished the game with 18 hits as the Cobras won the opener 13-5. Feenewald led Coker with his 4-for-4 effort, including a double and four RBI.

Tusculum jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning, including an RBI triple off the bat of Jeremiah Tullidge. Tullidge would score thanks to Jim Tolle's RBI groundout.

It was all Coker from there as the Cobras scored two times in the third and four runs each in the third and fourth frames to take a 10-2 advantage.

After a shaky opening inning Baldwin blanked the Pioneers for the next seven innings. Tusculum tallied three runs in the ninth inning on Creighton Wilke's pinch-hit home run.

The Pioneers end the game with eight hits including 2-for-5 performances from Tullidge and Andrew Bowerman.

For Coker, Will Winslow went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Sammy Song went 2-for-3 and a scored a game-high four runs.

Game 2: Coker 4, Tusculum 3 (Box Score)

Coker overcame a 3-0 deficit and got a seven-inning complete game pitching effort from Ryan Milner as the Cobras edged Tusculum 4-3.

Similar to the first game, Tusculum jumped out of the gate and scored three runs on four hits, all with two outs, including a two-run single from Jalen Shuffler.

The Cobras answered with a three runs in the bottom of the second inning, including a two-run homer by Jack Leech, which was followed by a solo shot off the bat of Fennewald.

Coker scored the go-ahead run in the third inning off of starter McKenly Berry. Bryson Conner reached on a one-out double and he scored the eventual game-winning run on Song's base hit to left field.

Tusculum bullpen ace Devan Watts kept the Cobras within striking distance as he pitched 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief where he scattered three hits and recorded three strikeouts.

In the final inning, the Pioneers got runners at first and second with two outs, but Milner would end the game on a pop out to move his record to 3-2 on the season.

Tusculum finished the game with 10 hits, including Chris Waylock's 2-for-4 effort. Bowerman posted a hit in both games of the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to eight in a row.

The Pioneers (22-12, 16-7 SAC) return home Monday afternoon when they host King University for a 5 p.m. contest. This is a rescheduled game from earlier this season. It will open a five-game home-stand for Tusculum.
