Tusculum baseball defeats Lee 3-1 in pitchers? duel

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College got a pair of sterling pitching performances by Ethan Carpenter and Billy Sivyer as the Pioneers outdueled Lee University 3-1 Tuesday night at Pioneer Park in a non-conference baseball game.

With the victory, Tusculum completes the season sweep over the Flames (23-16).

The Pioneers (25-14) got all of their offense in the second inning while Carpenter (4-0) allowed a run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in his seven innings of work. Sivyer worked around a walk and a base hit in the eighth and ended the inning with his 100th career strikeout. He would returned the side in order in the ninth to post his third saves of the season and eighth of his collegiate career.

In the second inning, Tusculum pounded out four hits, including RBI singles by Chris Waylock and Trey Drewery.

The Flames plated a run in the third inning off of Carpenter thanks to a two-out single by Derrick Pitts.

Tusculum finished the game with seven hits, including two-hit performances by Waylock and John Topoleski.

Lee starter CJ Lusted (2-3) suffered the loss as he pitched 4 2/3 innings. LU reliever Jeremy Bales allowed one hit and a pair of walks in his 3 1/3 shutout innings.

TC first baseman Heath Comerford saw a pair of streaks end for him as he went 0-for-4, snapping a 13-game hitting streak and a 28-game run of reaching base safely.

Lee's Blake Ray accounted for two of his team's five hits on the evening.

The Pioneers are back in action this weekend as they host SAC rival Catawba College for a three-game series at Pioneer Park, beginning with Friday's 6 p.m. contest.

On Friday, Tusculum will be honoring the 1964 baseball squad, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the program's first Volunteer State Athletic Conference championship. Members of the 1964 team will be recognized in pre-game ceremonies.

The TC/Catawba series will wrap up on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Prior to Saturday's first game, Tusculum will be honoring its seniors.
