Tusculum baseball leads nation in runs, walks, sacrifice flies

INDIANAPOLIS --- For a second straight week, the Tusculum College baseball team leads the nation in runs scored, bases on balls and sacrifice flies according to this week's NCAA Division II statistics.

The Pioneers are ranked in 15 team categories, while seven players are mentioned 13 times, individually.

Tusculum has recorded 341 runs, 203 walks and 28 sacrifice flies, all tops in the country.

The Pioneers are also third in scoring (9.3 runs per game), third in hits (420), fourth in home runs (39), sixth in hit by pitch (60), seventh in slugging percentage (.518), 10th in batting average (.338), 12th in doubles (81), 22nd in triples (13), 27th in stolen bases (62), 30th in sacrifice bunts (27), 31st in double plays (27) and 37th in won-loss percentage (.730).

Senior All-American catcher Sean Cotten (Mooresville, N.C.) is ranked in the top 50 in eight statistical categories, including seventh in sacrifice flies (5), 12th in bases on balls (27), 15th in home runs (8), 18th in total bases (82), 19th in RBI (39), 26th in slugging percentage (.683), 28th in runs scored (38) and 41st in on-base percentage (.494).

Junior outfielder Alexi Colon (Vineland, N.J.) is listed six times, including: fourth in RBI (49), 12th in bases on balls (27), 25th in sacrifice flies (4), 28th in runs scored (38), 32nd in home runs (7) and 33rd in total bases (80).

Senior outfielder Rolondo Bonner (Garner, N.C.) is ranked in four statistical categories, including: fifth in runs scored (45), 25th in sacrifice flies (4), 43rd in home runs (6) and 48th in total bases (79).

Senior shortstop Branfy Arias (La Romana, D.R.) is listed in three categories, including: seventh in sacrifice bunts (9), 14th in hit by pitch (12) and 42nd in triples (3).

Senior second baseman Payden Houser (Lincolnton, N.C.) and junior pitcher Craig Goodman (Clearwater, Fla.) are each mentioned twice in this week's report. Houser is 25th in sacrifice flies (4) and 39th in base on balls (39), while Goodman is 17th in pitching victories (6) and 44th in strikeouts (51).

Sophomore third baseman Matt Henriksen (Hingham, Mass.) rounds out the report for the Pioneers as he is 49th in with his 76 total bases.

Tusculum (27-10, 13-8 SAC) returns to South Atlantic Conference play this weekend for a three-game series against Mars Hill College. The series begins with a single-game on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday's 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Niswonger Sports Complex and Pioneer Park. The Pioneers are in a three-way tie for second place in the league and are four games behind league-leader Catawba College.
