GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Boo Morrow
recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts to lead the Tusculum College
baseball team to a 5-1 South Atlantic Conference win over visiting
Wingate University Friday night at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers
(32-11, 10-8 SAC) win their eighth straight game and 10th in a row
over the Bulldogs (18-30, 7-11 SAC).
Morrow, a junior from Lexington, Ky., went the distance for a
second straight game has he surrendered an unearned run, scattered
seven hits and walked, improving his unblemished record to 6-0 on
the year and 10-0 for his career. The 13 strikeouts are the second
most ever by a Pioneer hurler, three shy of the school record 16
posted by Eric Yankovich in 1985.
Carlos Rivera and Christian Rosa
each recorded a pair of hits, including a triple by both.
Maikol Gonzalez added a single to extend his
hitting streak to 19 in a row.
Wingate jumped out to an early lead as Nick
Siega-Riz led off the game with a double down the right
field line. He would later steal third, but the throw by TC catcher
Marc Hyndsman sailed down the left field line,
scoring Siega-Riz for a 1-0 lead for the Bulldogs.
Wingate pitcher Dusty White was equally effective
for the visitors as he retired six of the first batters he would
face. Tusculum would punch through in the third as Hyndsman reached
on an error to lead off the frame. Rosa moved him to second on an
infield hit and both would cross the plate on Rivera's triple to
the left field gap to move the Pioneers up 2-1. Rivera would come
into score on Gonzalez's sacrifice fly as TC led 3-1.
Tusculum added a run in sixth when Gonzalez led off with a hit and
later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. TC posted their final
tally of the game in the eight as Rosa drew a lead-off walk, moved
to third on Rivera's 11th double of the year and later scored on a
ground out by Eric Conley.
Meanwhile, Morrow motored along as he didn't allow a base runner
past second base for the remainder of the game as he retired eight
of the final nine Wingate players he would face.
White suffered the loss (5-4), despite going the distance for his
fourth complete game of the season. He allowed six hits, five runs,
three earned, walked two and struck out four as he tossed 113
pitches on the night.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1
p.m. from Pioneer Park.
