Pioneers sweep Rams at Badger Classic

GULF SHORES, Ala. --- The Tusculum University beach volleyball team went 1-2 on day one of the Badger Classic. The Pioneers fell to New Orleans and host Spring Hill, but shut out the UMobile Rams.

Tusculum (8-3) continues its time in Gulf Shores on Saturday (Mar. 5) morning, facing William Carey and Berry on the final day of the SHC Badger Classic.

Match 1: New Orleans 5, Tusculum 0
The Pioneers did not fare well in their event opener as they were swept by the Privateers. The No. 2 pair of Haley Davis and Emma Johnson suffered their first loss of the season, as did the fourth flight, Olivia Knutson and Katie McLamb.

Olivia O'Keefe and Charlyn Miller fell by identical 21-18 set scores in the top slot.

Davis and Johnson fought for three sets but came up short via 21-18, 19-21, 11-15 decision.

Britney Shawel and Landry Tea nearly forced the tie-breaking frame in their 8-21, 20-22 loss.

Knutson and McLamb also lost badly in set one (21-7) and dropped set two by the narrowest of margins (21-19).

Diana Bierwagen and Arizona Webb dropped the 21-15, 21-15 outcome in the fifth flight.

In the exhibition, Skyellar Hall and Emily Lawless were on the wrong side of a three-set battle: 18-21, 21-13, 14-16.

Match 2: Tusculum 5, UMobile 0
TU flipped the script in the next match, blowing out the University of Mobile Rams.

O'Keefe and Miller shut down their opposites: 21-10, 21-5.

Davis and Johnson had no trouble rebounding from their loss in a 21-11, 21-15 showing.

Knutson and McLamb moved up to the third flight for the first time and collected a 21-8, 21-10 win.

Tea and Shawel had to fight for the set one win at No. 4 (23-21) and responded with a 21-10 close out.

Hall and Lawless took over the No. 5 slot to claim their 21-19, 21-13 win.

Destiny Ramsey and Morgan Pacione took care of their counterparts 21-18, 21-15 to remain perfect at the exhibition flight.

Match 3: Spring Hill 4, Tusculum 1
The final match of the day was grueling as three of the five duels needed a third set.

O'Keefe and Miller were the lone pair to win twice on the day, outlasting the Badgers in a reverse sweep: 14-21, 21-14, 18-16.

In the second slot, Davis and Johnson dropped its three-set showing and were the victims of a comeback: 21-12, 18-21, 10-15.

Back at No. 3, Shawel and Tea suffered a 21-15, 21-8 setback.

Knutson and McLamb went down fighting in their overtime three-setter: 15-21, 21-18, 14-16.

Webb and Bierwagen returned to the fifth flight in the nightcap, but came up just short: 15-21, 20-22.
