GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum quarterback Tre Simmons and rightside hitter Carli Pigza have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.
Simmons, a freshman from Temple Terrace, Florida, recorded a season-high 394 total offensive yards and accounted for four touchdowns in Saturday's 48-13 season-finale win over Carson-Newman. Simmons went 22-of-35 from 362 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards and a three-yard TD. Nine of his 22 completions were went for over 20 yards including TD passes covering 21, 54 and 65 yards. This season, Simmons has passed for 776 yards and eight touchdowns. The Pioneers finished the football campaign with a 5-6 record.
Pigza, a senior from Fort Mill, South Carolina, averaged 4.13 kills per set and posted a .324 hitting percentage in leading the Pioneers to a 2-0 record to end the regular season and capture the program its first SAC Volleyball Championship. She opened the week with a season-high 19 kills and hit .302 as TU rallied to a 3-2 win at Carson-Newman. She followed with 14 kills and hit at a .357 clip in a 3-0 sweep at Lincoln Memorial.
Pigza is averaging 2.76 kills and 0.45 blocks per set as the Pioneers are 19-4 overall and 15-3 in SAC play as Tusculum won its sixth league championship in school history. TU earned the top-seed in this week's SAC Tournament and will host eighth-seeded Catawba in a SAC quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
