GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University quarterback Rogan Wells and softball pitcher Emily Sappington have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week. Wells garners his second Athlete of the Week honor this spring, while Sappington earns her inaugural Zaxby's recognition.
Wells, a graduate student from Fort Mill, South Carolina, passed for a career-best 519 yards and five touchdowns in Tusculum's 49-17 home win over Limestone. Wells completed passes to 10 different receivers as seven of his 33 completions went for 25 or more yards including TD passes covering 38, 50 and 56 yards. His 519 passing yards are the fourth-most in a TU single-game and his 542 total offensive yards are tied for the third-most in school history. He also rushed for a 13-yard touchdown.
Sappington, a sophomore from Ashburn, Virginia pitched her second no-hitter this season as she went 10 innings in a 1-0 marathon win at Lenoir-Rhyne. In the win over L-R, she recorded nine strikeouts with zero walks in the victory over the Bears. She also went 1-for-1 at the plate with three walks.
Sappington has a 5-5 record with one save in her 72.1 innings pitched. She has a 1.74 earned run average and has accounted for 77 strikeouts.
The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
