GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University lacrosse midfielder AJ Hems and distance runner Nicole McMillen have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.
Hems scored a career-high five goals in the Pioneers' season-opening 14-8 win at Barton on Saturday. Hems scored four of his five goals in the first half as the Pioneers built a 6-3 halftime lead, and his five goals came on seven shot attempts (six on goal).
The Laurens, South Carolina product also set a career high with his five points against Barton, surpassing his previous high of four points set twice last season, including in a four-goal game at Shorter.
McMillen broke her own SAC and Tusculum record and finished second in the 5,000 meters at the Camel City Invitational at the JDL Fast Track on Friday. Her time of 16:53.86 knocked 7 1/2 seconds off her previous record of 17:01.33 set at the Gamecock Opener on Jan. 18. Her converted time of 16:46.16 ranks McMillen seventh in the latest DII rankings in the 5,000 meters.
In addition to her performance in the 5K, the Pickering, Ontario native currently ranks seventh in the 3000 meters on the national performance list with a time of 9:39.38 set Jan. 31 at the Carolina Challenge. She earns this weekly honor for a sixth time this year.
The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
