Beason, Newby named Bojangles Athletes of the Week

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum cross country runner Jackson Beason and soccer forward Jordan Newby have been named the Bojangles Athletes of the Week.                                    

Beason was the Pioneers' top finisher at the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Championship as he crossed the line in 56th place with a time of 34:34.9. Beason, a native of Maryville, Tennessee and a graduate of Alcoa High School, was 27th among South Atlantic Conference runners in the 10-kilometer race, and gave the Pioneers their best individual finish in the regional meet since 2014.

Newby scored in regulation and in penalty kicks as the Pioneer women's soccer team advanced past Lenoir-Rhyne Tuesday night into the SAC semifinals. Newby opened the scoring with a goal in the 26th minute, then scored the third of four penalty kicks for the Pioneers, who outscored the Bears 4-2 in penalties after the teams played to a 1-1 draw. The native of Clinton, Tennessee was also recognized last week with a spot on the SAC All-Conference team as an honorable mention selection, after finishing the season with a team-high six goals.
