GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum lacrosse goalie Kevin Haggerty and softball pitcher Taylor Plemons have been named the Bojangles Athletes of the Week.
Haggerty, a senior from Suffern, New York, led the Pioneers to a pair of South Atlantic Conference victories as the Pioneers improve to 8-2 on the season and 4-1 in the league to move into sole possession of second place in the SAC standings. He played in every minute in goal as he logged 23 saves, nine ground balls and caused two turnovers in his two contests.
In Tusculum's 13-12 overtime win at Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, Haggerty accounted for nine saves, including a critical stop in overtime. He finished the game with five ground balls and caused a turnover late in regulation. He followed that performance with a 14-save effort in TC's 12-9 statement victory over Queens on Saturday, the Pioneers' first-ever victory over the Royals. He also posted four ground balls and caused a turnover in TC's third straight victory.
Haggerty is having an All-Conference season, posting a 9.05 goals against average which is third in the conference, while his 99 saves are sixth in the SAC. He is also the league leader with eight wins in goal.
Plemons, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee, went 2-1 with a 0.74 earned run average as the Pioneers split conference doubleheaders with Lincoln Memorial and Coker last week. Plemons allowed five hits and struck out three in a 6-5 win over LMU in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, then pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in game two. On Saturday, Plemons threw a three-hitter for her second career shutout as the Pioneers blanked Coker 2-0 in game one of their doubleheader. She then started game two and worked 3 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs in the loss.
For the week, Plemons allowed 18 hits in 19 innings and struck out 10 without walking a batter.
