Coddington places inside top 20 at Royals Challenge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Royals Challenge Friday afternoon, hosted by Queens University at McAlpine Park.

The Pioneer men took 19th out of 30 teams with 517 points, while the Pioneer women finished 24th out of 29 teams in the Gold division with 647 points.

Tusculum will begin preparation for the South Atlantic Conference Championship, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 21 at Newton, North Carolina.

MEN'S RECAP
Freshman Pau Valdepenas was the top finisher for the Pioneers, earning 37th place as he covered the 8-kilometer course in 25:39.71. Freshman Sam Shipp was 71st overall in 26:12.19, with senior Antonio Aparicio in 183rd place at 28:23.37.

Sophomore Jerry Ricker was timed in 28:48.10 and placed 201st overall, with freshman Simon Ray the fifth finisher for Tusculum in 234th place at 30:05.32. Also running for the Pioneers were junior Ryan Drysch, who was 244th at 30:47.76, and junior Landen Locklear who placed 271st at 35:12.50.

Milligan won the team title with 52 points, with Davis & Elkins in second at 104 points and Wake Forest third with 107 points. Will Stockley of Milligan was the race winner as he beat unattached runner Rogerio Amaral to the line by 5.2 seconds with a time of 24:30.11.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Senior Emily Coddington took 17th place in a field of nearly 250 runners with a time of 18:18.25 for the 5-kilometer race. Sophomore Inmaculada Delgado was 125th overall at 20:14.44, followed by senior Judy Chellah in 203rd place at 22:42.44.

Sophomore Victoria Caliendo was 226th at 24:15.28, and junior Silvia Bah was the fifth finisher for the Pioneers in 242nd place at 30:55.81.

Milligan earned the team championship with 77 points, with Wingate in second at 99 points and College of Charleston in third on a tiebreaker over Furman after both teams had 104 points. Furman's Madelynne Cadeau was the individual winner in 17:14.90, which was 8.5 seconds faster than unattached runner-up Camryn Wennersten.
