Pioneers lead college teams at Walters State Invitational

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Walters State Invitational Saturday morning.

The Pioneers were second overall and first among college teams in both the men's and women's standings, with senior Emily Coddington placing first overall in the women's individual race and freshman Pau Valdepenas taking second overall in the men's race.

The Pioneer women will run next Friday, Sept. 15 in the Covered Bridge Open at Appalachian State, with both teams back on the course on Saturday, Sept. 30 in the Akiah McMillan Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina.

MEN'S RECAP
Valdepenas was the top collegiate finisher as he ran 27:13.84, placing second overall behind Ethan Wever of the Tennessee Running Club who was the top finisher in 27:09.00. Fellow freshman Sam Shipp took third overall and second among college runners in 27:31.94, and sophomore Jerry Ricker was sixth among college runners and 11th overall in 29:25.38.

Freshman Simon Ray was ninth collegiately and 15th overall in 30:59.49, senior Antonio Aparicio was 18th overall in 31:22.50 and junior Landen Locklear finished 38th overall in 36:17.37.

The Tennessee Running Club was the top finishing team with 33 points, while Tusculum was first among the five collegiate teams with 48 points. Walters State took third at 79 points, with Pellissippi State in fourth at 82 points. Maryville placed fifth with 122 points, and Roane State took sixth at 166 points.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Coddington earned her second career race victory as she crossed the line in 19:39.92, which was 23 seconds ahead of runner-up Julianne Dodson of Walters State. Sophomore Inmaculada Delgado was fourth in 20:24.94, and senior Judy Chellah took 17th place at 24:33.30.

Sophomore Victoria Caliendo was 20th overall at 25:36.37, and junior Silvia Bah placed 31st overall in 32:31.92 for the Pioneers.

The Tennessee Running Club had four runners in the top 10 and finished first with 27 points, with Tusculum in second with 62 points. Maryville took third place at 75 points, followed by Pellissippi State at 76 points and Roane State at 84 points.
