HOLZAPFEL BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD AT EYE OPENER INVITATIONAL

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Tusculum College Simon Holzapfel finished third in the Division II portion of the Eye Opener Invitational with a school record time Saturday morning at the Milliken Center, hosted by USC Upstate.

Holzapfel, a sophomore for Nuremberg, Germany, broke the previous 8K record with Saturday's time of 26:43. Holzapfel held the previous mark of 26:59 at the Maryville Invitational last season.

Tusculum finished 13th of the 22 non-Division I teams participating with 307 points. South Atlantic Conference member Mars Hill won the team title with 61 points, followed by Spartanburg Methodist (126), Wingate (137), King (153), Benedict (180), Truett McConnell (184), Erskine (212), Lenoir-Rhyne (223), Darton (226), Virginia-Wise (262), Anderson (303), Young Harris (303), Tusculum, Carson-Newman (349), Belmont Abbey (396), Newberry (413), Limestone (437), Southern Wesleyan (463), Catawba (476), Brevard (527), Toccoa Falls (534) and Paine (609).

Newcomer Sean Crawford finished 28th for the Pioneers with a time of 28:20, while rookie Elvis Machado posted a time of 30:45 to finish 80th. Will Jusino placed 91st with a time of 31:19, while senior Matt Ross finished 105th at 32:33. Ben Hale (110th - 33:17) and Conner Graves (134th - 42:35) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneer men.

In the women's race, Tusculum finished 19th of the 25 non-Division I field with 504 points. SAC member Lenoir-Rhyne won the D-II portion of the meet with 89 points, followed by Lees-McRae (108), Wingate - Blue (162), Carson-Newman (166), Converse (173), Lander (182), Catawba (202), Mars Hill (233), King (242), Limestone (305), Young Harris (310), Spartanburg Methodist (314), Erskine (321), Southern Wesleyan (334), Wingate - Gold (351), Darton (377), Belmont Abbey (422), Brevard (478), Tusculum, Newberry (518), Toccoa Falls (536), Spellman (543), Benedict (655), Truett McConnell (687) and Paine (691).

Senior Alicja Dembna was the top finisher for the Pioneers, placing 19th with a time of 20:48 on the 5K course. Katie Shelton finished 55th with a time of 22:04, while Jill Stiles recorded a time of 28:02 to place 141st. Jessica Figler (143rd - 28:31), Karen Henniger (146th - 29:25) and Ashley Steinle (148th - 29:57) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers.

Tusculum will be back in action Sep. 27 when they travel to Charleston, S.C. for The Citadel Invitational.
