GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum women's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Anderson University on Friday (Sept. 29) night.
The Pioneers (9-5, 5-2 SAC) suffered their first home loss of the season, falling to the Trojans (12-3, 5-1 SAC) by scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-20). AU was receiving votes in the latest national poll.
Jaelyn Grimm and Tabitha Wheeler notched 11 kills for the visiting Trojans, highlighted by the former's .625 hitting clip. Jenna Long dished out 37 assists, while Katy Smith (2), Grimm (1), Wheeler (1), and Lindsay McCurley (1) landed the service aces. Four players for Anderson reached double-figures in digs: Long (13), Smith (13), McCurley (13), and Wheeler (10). At the net, both Sadie Kluner and Emily Campbell were credited with a pair of block assists.
Aly Freeland led the Pioneers with nine kills, just ahead of Emiah Burrowes (7), Martina Foster (6), and Whitney Thompson (5). Adding to the total were Madison Adkins (2), Bailey Parker (2), Olivia Crowl (2), and Jordyn Anderson (1). Adkins distributed 30 assists as Freeland, Burrowes, and Caley Sosnowski were responsible for the team's aces. Sosnowski registered a match-high 23 digs as the TU libero, followed by Freeland's 10. Burrowes and Foster had a hand in two blocks apiece.
Anderson hit .235 as a team with 43 kills and 15 errors on 119 total attempts. Tusculum hit .130 with 34 kills, 18 errors, and 123 total attacks. The Trojans led the Pioneers in assists (40-31), service aces (5-3), and digs (63-56), while the teams tied with four total blocks each.
Tusculum rounds out its homestand with a Tuesday (Oct. 3) night showdown against SAC newcomer Emory & Henry (3-9, 1-5 SAC). First serve from Pioneer Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
