Pioneers stall against Bears

HICKORY, N.C. --- The Tusculum University women's volleyball team had its 10-match winning streak come to an end on Friday (Oct. 1) night. Lenoir-Rhyne claimed the battle of the SAC's top-two teams in straight sets.

The Bears (7-2, 5-0 SAC) won by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-11 to complete the sweep over the Pioneers (10-2, 6-1 SAC).

Taylor Prall led Lenoir-Rhyne with eight kills, while Emma Clark fired on a .600 clip to collect seven kills. No Bear recorded more than one attack error in the match. Mackenzie Hulsey dished out 19 assists, followed by 12 from Rachel Wildermuth. Prall also finished with a match-high three service aces and 14 digs. The libero, Rachel Bewick, scooped up 11. Braelyn Faust was busy at the net and was credited with seven block assists. Prall added five, while Clark and Alannah Thomas knocked down three attempts.

Carli Pigza finished with a team-best eight kills, ahead of six by Emiah Burrowes and five from Bailey Parker. The latter averaged a .500 hitting percentage. Elise Carmichael headed up the offensive attack with 13 assists, while Catherine Clingan was responsible for seven. The two setters were the lone Pioneers to record an ace in the match. Carly Sosnowski collected double-digit digs for the 11th time in the season's 12 matches with her team-high 13 digs. Four players for TU are credited with a block assist: Pigza, Kyndall Kalb, Parker, and Raven Chance.

Lenoir-Rhyne finished the match with a .337 hitting percentage with 37 kills, eight errors, and 86 total attempts. TU tallied 26 kills, 20 errors, and 101 attacks for a .059 hitting percentage. The Bears led the Pioneers in assists (34-26), digs (49-35), aces (6-2), and total blocks (10-2).

Tusculum looks to return to its winning ways on Saturday, October 2 at Mars Hill. First serve against the Lions is scheduled for 5 p.m. start.
