Pioneers fall 3-1 to Mars Hill in home volleyball finale

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Mars Hill volleyball team rallied from a set down to win three straight and capture a 3-1 South Atlantic Conference victory at Tusculum Tuesday night at Pioneer Arena.

The Lions (16-11, 10-9 SAC) won by scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 to sweep the season series over the Pioneers (6-18, 4-14 SAC).

Mars Hill overcame a 20-12 deficit in the second set and went on a 13-3 run to win the set and carried the momentum from there for the victory.

Mars Hill's Maddie Spurgeon posted 14 kills, five blocks and a .306 hitting percentage while Elizabeth Kaeser added 13 kills and a team-high 28 digs.  MHU's Sara Goddard tallied 12 kills, 11 digs, two service aces and a .353 hitting percentage for the visitors.

Tusculum's Gabby Gray led the Pioneers with her 18 kills, while senior Cassie Born, the reigning SAC Player of the Week, posted her fourth consecutive double-double with 17 kills and 15 digs in her TU home finale.  Aubrey Hawkins finished with 10 kills, while setter Alyssa Rojas added 39 assists and six digs for the Pioneers.  TU senior libero, Melissa Mazur, playing in her final home match at Pioneer Arena, recorded 37 digs to go along with four assists and a service ace for the Black and Orange.

Tusculum finished the match with 62 kills, 23 errors and 176 attempts for a .222 hitting percentage.  Mars Hill totaled 58 kills, 18 errors and 170 attacks for a .235 attack percentage.  MHU accounted for 8.0 team blocks while Tusculum finished with four.  Mars Hill edged Tusculum 84-82 in digs and 6-3 in service aces.

Tuesday was the final home match for Tusculum seniors Cassie Born, Melissa Mazur and Brooke Statler.

The Pioneers will close out the regular season this weekend with road matches at 25th-ranked Wingate on Friday and Coker on Saturday.
