SALISBURY, N.C. --- Four Pioneers tallied
double-figure kills in Tusculum College's 3-1 victory over Catawba
College on Saturday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball
action from Salisbury, North Carolina. TC senior Megan Hasse led
all players with a season-high 26 kills.
Tusculum won the first set 25-23 before Catawba took the
second set by the same score. TC closed out the match by winning
the third and fourth sets by identical 25-18 scores. With the win,
the Pioneers improve to 11-6 in the SAC and 12-13 overall while the
Indians fall to 4-13 in the conference and 6-17 overall.
Freshman outside hitter Sabrina Schleuger recorded a
double-double with 15 digs and 10 kills. Sophomore outside hitter
Rachel Garnett tallied 12 kills while freshman outside hitter
Laryssa Welch finished with 11.
Freshman setter Shannon Murphy compiled a match-high 45
assists and sophomore libero Moriah Jones dug-up a match high 27
balls. Hasse added nine digs and compiled a .404 attack clip.
Tusculum led the first set wire-to-wire, but a kill by the
Indians' Erin Morant tied the set at 17-17. TC responded with a 6-2
run to stretch its lead to 23-19, but Catawba reeled off
three-straight points to cut the deficit to just 23-22. A Hasse
kill gave the Pioneers set point, and after a Catawba kill, a kill
by Garnett sealed the set victory.
After the Indians won the second set by two, they held a 6-4
lead early in the third set. However, TC answered with a 5-1 run,
primarily off the service of sophomore defensive specialist Andrea
Amettis, to take an 8-6 lead and force an Indian timeout. A few
rallies later, TC held a 15-9 lead, but a 7-2 run by Catawba gave
the Indians a 17-15 advantage.
TC answered with six straight points, and again off the
service of Amettis, took a commanding 23-15 lead. Tusculum
benefitted from an Indian attack error and ended the set with a
kill by Welch to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Pioneers hit a
sizzling .351 in the set.
Using the momentum of the third-set victory, TC raced out to a
6-1 lead and forced an early timeout by Catawba. Later in the set,
Tusculum reeled off a pair of 3-0 runs that helped push the lead to
20-13. Catawba was able to cut the deficit to 23-18, but
back-to-back kills by Welch and Hasse sealed the Pioneer
victory.
Haley Lanier led the Indians with 12 kills, while Kaytee
Frabotta dished out 35 assists. Hadleigh Loy compiled 21 digs while
McKenzie Garrison added 13.
The Pioneers will be back on the road next weekend starting at
Brevard on Friday night. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
