CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Sabrina Schleuger
recorded her third double-double of the season to lead the Tusculum
College to a 3-1 victory over Queens University of Charlotte on
Friday night in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action from
Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Pioneers took the first set 25-18 before Queens tied the
match at 1-1 after winning the second set 25-19. TC won the third
set 25-13 and closed out the match with a 25-17 fourth-set victory.
Tusculum sees its overall record improve to 11-13 and its
conference mark to 10-6. Queens falls to 6-18 overall and 3-13 in
the SAC.
Schleuger tallied a match-high 14 kills and 14 digs. Freshman
setter Shannon Murphy also recorded a double-double with a
match-high 31 assists and 12 digs. Senior outside hitter Megan
Hasse added 11 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Jaida Allen
finished with nine kills and a match-high seven blocks. Sophomore
libero Moriah Jones dug-up a match-high 27 balls.
Holding an 8-5 lead early in the first set, Tusculum used an
8-2 run to take a commanding 16-7 lead. Helped by a pair of 3-0
runs and a 4-0 spurt, the Royals were able to cut the Pioneer lead
to 22-17 later in the set. However, TC was able to close out the
first game with a 3-1 run that included a pair of kills by junior
outside hitter Danae Stauffer.
After the Royals' six point second-set victory, TC raced out
to a 20-9 lead in the third set with the help of three 4-0 runs.
The Pioneers hit a sizzling .351 during the third game and rolled
to the 12-point victory. Just like the first set, a kill by
Stauffer was the final point for TC in the game.
The Pioneers' biggest run of the night came in the fourth set
when they reeled off eight straight points to open up an early 11-3
advantage. The closest Queens would come to the lead would be five
points, and back-to-back kills by Allen and Schleuger earned the
Pioneers match-point late in the set. The Royals fought off the
final point once, but a bad set by Liza Schimmelfing gave TC the
victory.
Rebecca Cochran led the Royal offense with 10 kills, while
Megan Mancini led the defense with 28 digs. Sydney Kunz dished out
32 assists and Schimmelfing and Katie Shoenrock each finished with
double-figure digs.
The Pioneers will return to the court tomorrow when they
travel to Salisbury, North Carolina to face Catawba College. First
serve is set for 5 p.m.
