GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Freshman Sabrina
Schleuger recorded a career-high 21 kills, but Tusculum College
fell 3-1 to visiting Carson-Newman University on Tuesday night in
South Atlantic Conference volleyball action inside Pioneer
Arena.
TC (10-13, 9-6 SAC) dropped the first set 25-20, but rallied
to win the second set 25-19. Carson-Newman (19-4, 14-1) took the
third set 25-19 before closing out the match by winning the fourth
set 25-18.
Freshman setter Shannon Murphy and junior setter Hannah
Berling each recorded double-doubles for the Pioneers. Murphy
tallied her fifth double-double of the season after dishing out 19
assists and 16 digs, while 14 assists and 12 digs earned Berling
her seventh double-double this year.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Garnett and freshman middle
blocker Laryssa Welch each tallied eight kills. Freshman libero
Dana Van Dyke finished with 10 digs while sophomore libero Moriah
Jones dug-up 12.
The Eagles were led by Rachel Harper who earned a
double-double with 23 digs and 17 kills. Kristen Pickett also had a
double-double with a match high 40 assists and 14 digs, while Jenna
Wilson added 10 kills. Sara Fairley and Taylor Lowe each had
double-figure digs with 11 and 15 respectively.
After the Eagles won the first set by six, the Pioneers jumped
out to a 4-1 lead early in the second set. Carson-Newman tool its
first lead of the set with the score at 9-8, but a 4-0 run a few
rallies later gave TC a 16-12 lead and forced an Eagle
timeout.
Later in the set, TC was holding a 22-17 lead when a service
ace by Pickett put the Pioneers two points away from tying the
match at 1-1. Carson-Newman reeled off a quick 2-0 spurt to cut the
lead to 23-19, but Tusculum closed out the set with a kill by
freshman middle blocker Erin Carmody and an attack error by Fairley
for a six point second-set victory.
The Eagles answered with a six point third-set victory, and
used an 8-2 run in the middle of the fourth set to close out the
match with a seven point fourth-set victory.
The Pioneers are set to hit the road for the next four matches
starting on Friday night (Oct. 24) in Charlotte, North Carolina to
take on Queens University of Charlotte. First serve is set for 7
p.m.
