GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Newberry College
volleyball team played spoiler in Tusculum College's annual Dig
Pink match by defeating TC 3-1 on Saturday afternoon inside Pioneer
Arena. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Garnett led the Pioneers
(10-12, 9-5 South Atlantic Conference) with 11 kills.
Tusculum won the first set 25-18, but Newberry (11-11, 5-9
SAC) won the next three sets by the scores of 25-19, 25-19, and
25-23. With the win, the Wolves even the regular season series with
TC after the Pioneers defeated Newberry 3-1 on its home court back
on September 20.
Senior outside hitter Megan Hasse recorded nine kills, four
digs, and two blocks, while sophomore middle blocker Jaida Allen
added seven kills and four blocks. Freshman setter Shannon Murphy
dished out 16 assists, while junior setter Hannah Berling tallied
13.
Sophomore libero Moriah Jones had a team-high 18 digs, while
freshman libero Dana Van Dyke and sophomore defensive specialist
Andrea Amettis each dug-up 10 balls.
Trailing 5-4 in the first set, the Pioneers used a 5-0 run off
the service of Amettis to jump out to an 8-5 lead and force a
Newberry timeout. Later in the set, TC reeled off a 6-0 run to take
a 16-9 lead, and a service ace by Hasse two rallies later gave the
Pioneers their biggest lead of the match at 18-10.
Newberry was able to cut the deficit to 23-18 late in the set,
but a service error by the Wolves' Wendy Davis and a kill by
Garnett gave TC the seven point first-set victory. However,
Newberry responded with back-to-back six point set victories to
take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, Newberry jumped out to an early 7-1 lead
and looked poised to cruise to the victory. But TC responded with a
7-1 run of their own and tied the match at 8-8. In the next rally,
the Pioneers took their first lead of the set on a service ace by
Amettis, and went on to take a 19-16 lead later in the game.
Facing a winner-take-all fifth set, the Wolves found
themselves behind 21-19 after a kill by Allen. However, Newberry
responded with a 3-0 run to take a 22-21 advantage, their first
lead of the set since leading 8-7. Newberry's Rachel Moran was
called for a ball handling error to knot the score at 22-22, and
Jessica King committed an attack error to give TC a 23-22
lead.
Newberry's Holly Brisson answered the Pioneers' 2-0 spurt with
a kill to tie the set at 23-23. The Wolves earned match point off a
kill by Logan Hayward, and won the match in the next rally on an
attack error by Hasse.
Brisson finished with a match-high 10 kills, while Elayni
Stokes recorded a match-high 30 digs. Moran dished out a match-high
20 assists.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Tuesday night (October
21) when they wrap-up a four match homestand against arch-rival
Carson-Newman. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
