WINGATE, N.C. --- The Tusculum College
volleyball team saw its nine-match winning streak come to an end at
the hands of No. 9 Wingate University by a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18,
25-15) score on Saturday evening in Wingate, North Carolina. Megan
Hasse, Rachel Garnett, and Laryssa Welch each had seven kills for
the Pioneers (10-9, 9-2 South Atlantic Conference).
Hasse, a senior outside hitter, finished with seven kills and
eight digs. Garnett, a sophomore outside hitter, and Welch, a
freshman outside hitter, also tallied seven kills each, while
Garnett dug up three balls and Welch dug up two. Freshman setter
Shannon Murphy had a team-high 16 assists and sophomore libero
Moriah Jones had a team-high nine digs.
Wingate (8-1, 11-0), who is ranked ninth in the latest AVCA
Division II poll, was led by Susie Murach and Shelly Stumpff who
finished with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Alison Cooke had a
match-high 39 assists and Corey McGowan and Kori Adams each had a
match-high 14 digs.
Wingate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after compiling
a blistering .571 hitting percentage en route to an eight point
first-set victory. In the second set, the score was tied on nine
occasions and the lead change hands three times. TC took its first
lead of the match by earning the first two points of the second set
off a Garnett Kill and a service ace by freshman outside hitter
Sabrina Schleuger.
Later in the set, a Bulldog attack error tied the match at
17-17. However, Wingate reeled off seven straight points to take
earn set-point with a 24-17 lead. A Welch kill ended the WU run,
but the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the match off a kill by Cooke.
Wingate led the third set wire-to-wire and used an early 7-0 run to
close out the 3-0 sweep.
Tusculum will open a four-match homestand on Tuesday night
(Oct. 14) when it welcomes Lincoln Memorial University to Pioneer
Arena. First set is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
