GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Megan Hasse tallied a
match-high 10 kills to lead Tusculum College to a 3-0 victory over
Brevard College on Friday night in South Atlantic Conference
volleyball action from Pioneer Arena. It was TC's (7-8, 6-1 SAC)
sixth-straight victory.
Tusculum rallied to win the first set 26-24 before taking the
second and third sets by identical 25-11 scores. Hasse, a senior
outside hitter, also added six digs while sophomore libero Moriah
Jones compiled a team-high 16 digs. Junior setter Hannah Berling
finished with a match-high 23 assists, and freshman middle blocker
Laryssa Welch added seven kills.
Brevard (8-6, 2-5) jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the
first set. However, the Pioneers rallied to tie the game at 15-15,
and took their first lead of the match on a big kill by Hasse.
After both sides traded the lead twice, the Tornados opened up a
23-19 lead and looked poised to take the first set.
However, the resilient Pioneers began to cut into the lead
using a 3-0 run off a huge kill by sophomore outside hitter Rachel
Garnett, and two attack errors by BC. After a Brevard timeout, TC
tied the match at 23-23 with a kill by freshman outside hitter
Sabrina Schleuger, and earned match point off a service ace by
Jones.
A kill by the Tornados' Hannah Elmore tied the set at 24-24,
and sent the game into extra points. But the game didn't require
many additional points, as back-to-back kills by Schleuger gave the
Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the match after taking the first set
26-24.
Holding a narrow 10-7 lead in the second set, TC reeled off a
10-1 run to push its advantage to 18-9. The swing in momentum was
fueled by Tusculum making some lineup changes, including the
addition of freshman middle blocker Mariah Lewis, who finished the
mach with three kills. The Pioneers reeled off a 6-0 run to help
win the second set 25-11.
After cruising to the second-set victory, Tusculum kept the
momentum going in the third game and jumped out to a 14-4 lead due
in part to an early 9-0 run. The Pioneers kept their foot on the
pedal and used a pair of 3-0 runs, and a 4-0 run, to easily take
the third set 25-11 and win the match 3-0.
Senior middle blocker Taylor Boone made her season debut in
the third set and recorded three digs. Also in the third set, the
Pioneers held the Tornados to a -.156 attack clip, and hit a
match-high .320 in the second set.
Elmore and Savannah Cox led Brevard offensively with six kills
each, while Alexsandra Vrvilo tallied a match-high 19 digs. Erin
Barr dished out 17 assists.
The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when
they welcome Lenoir-Rhyne University to Pioneer Arena. First serve
is set for 2 p.m.
