
INDIANAPOLIS --- Tusculum College's Caitlyn Dean is second on the nation in digs according to this week's NCAA Division II volleyball statistics announced officials Tuesday.
Dean, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind., is averaging 6.54 digs per set, which is currently only pace to be the second most in a season in Tusculum history. In her last outing, Dean posted a school single-match record 49 digs against Lincoln Memorial University last Tuesday.
Sophomore setter Ashley Sarmiento (Dayton, Ohio) is 33rd in the country in assists per set, dishing out 10.51 helpers per frame.
As a team, the Pioneers are second in the nation in digs per set (19.77 dps) and 45th in kills per set (13.09 kps).
Tusculum is the No. 4 seed in this week's Food Lion South
Atlantic Conference Volleyball Tournament and will open against
fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University on Friday at 2:30 p.m. This
year's tournament is being played at Mars Gymnasium on the campus
of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.
The Pioneers (17-11 overall) finished fourth in the final
conference standings with a 10-8 SAC record. The winner of the
Tusculum/Lenoir-Rhyne match will face the winner of the
quarterfinal battle between top-seeded Wingate University and No. 8
seed Carson-Newman College. That semifinal match will be played on
Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The SAC Tournament Championship
will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner earning the
league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
