Tusculum volleyball battles in road loss at No. 16 Armstrong

SAVANNAH, Ga. --- The Armstrong volleyball team remained undefeated on the season as the 16th-ranked Pirates posted a 3-0 win over visiting Tusculum Saturday afternoon at the Aquatics and Recreation Center (ARC). Armstrong (22-0) won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 26-24.

The Pirates held off a stubborn Tusculum squad as the match included 25 ties and six lead changes. Armstrong also established a new school record with its 11-match home winning streak, all coming this season.

Tusculum's Bailee Price accounted for 12 kills and nine digs, while Sam Underwood added nine kills and nine digs. Natalie Gaudreau finished with six kills and a dozen digs, while Taylor Boone tallied seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage (7-1-13). TC setter Ashley Sarmiento dished out 34 assists, while Caitlyn Dean recorded 18 digs in the loss.

AASU's Amanda Jones finished with 15 kills, while Stacey Davis and Jessica Santaniello accounted for 17 digs apiece. Brendyce Budd made 14 digs and three blocks, while Ashley Seal led the offense with 34 assists to go along with six digs.

Jones had six of her 15 kills in the first set as Armstrong hit .220 to take a 1-0 lead. The Pirates opened up a six-point lead in the second set, leading 18-12, but Tusculum fought back to close to within two points, 23-21, before a pair of kills from Jones ended the set, 25-22.

Tusculum took a 20-16 lead in the third set and served set point at 24-23, but a kill from Santaniello staved off the set and a pair of attacking errors by the Pioneers finished off the set and the match for the Pirates.

Tusculum returns home this Friday night as the Pioneers host 15th-ranked Wingate for a 7 p.m. match at Pioneer Arena. Tusculum enters the match with a 17-match home winning streak, including a perfect 9-0 this year. The last time TC dropped a home contest was Sept. 18, 2010 against Wingate.
