
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Kara Harris posted a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs to lead the Newberry College volleyball team to a three-set win over host Tusculum College Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Arena in South Atlantic Conference action.
Newberry (17-11, 7-6 SAC) won the match by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-15, while avenging last month's loss to the Pioneers (16-12, 7-7 SAC).
Harris posted a sizzling .579 hitting percentage without an attack error (11-0-19). It was a solid attack performance for Newberry as the Scarlet & Gray posted a .315 hitting percentage, while only making five attack errors.
Tusculum freshman Sam Underwood continued her stellar play of late as she led all players with her .611 attack percentage (11-0-18). Sophomore setter Peyton Colclough accounted for a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs, while freshman Bailee Price led her team with 13 digs in the loss.
The Pioneers scored the first three points of the match and led 7-2 in the opening set. But Newberry responded with a 6-1 spurt to knot the frame at 8-8 followed a Maia kill. TC regained the lead with a 5-1 run, including kills by senior Gina Coffaro and rookie Alyssa Raterman as the Pioneers went up 14-9.
The Scarlet & Gray tied it again with a 6-1 run, including a pair of kills by Harris to tie the set, 15-15. With the score tied at 19-19, Newberry closed out the set with 6-3 spurt that included two more kills by Harris as the visitors won 25-22.
The second set was all Newberry as they scored the first points of the frame and never looked back as the Scarlet & Gray posted a .281 hitting percentage in set to win 25-14.
In the third frame, the Pioneers battled back and led in the set 6-4 following a kill by Underwood. But with the score tied at 13-13, Newberry scored six straight points and closed out the match with a 12-2 run to seal the road victory.
Newberry setter Blair Browning finished with 31 assists and seven digs, while teammate Kember Lichtie added eight kills and 13 digs.
Tusculum returns to the court this Tuesday night as the Pioneers travel to Lincoln Memorial University for a 6:30 p.m. match.
