WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team participated in the PTR Collegiate Cup on Saturday and earned a split of their two matches.
The Pioneers lost 4-1 to 16th-ranked Georgia College in a match played at the Saddlebrook Resort, then defeated Francis Marion 6-1 at the Saint Leo Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers (3-1) host North Georgia on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Nichols Tennis Complex in their spring home opener.
#16 GEORGIA COLLEGE 4, TUSCULUM 1
The Bobcats swept three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match, then won the final two singles matches after the Pioneers earned a victory from freshman Thilda Danielsson at flight four.
Georgia College had a 1-0 lead entering singles, and went up 2-0 before Danielsson beat Ashton Morrison 6-3, 6-4. After Georgia College took a 3-1 lead, the Bobcats received the clinching point at flight one as Jada Young beat Valentina Loretz 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
TUSCULUM 6, FRANCIS MARION 1
The Pioneers won the decisive doubles match to go up 1-0 over the Patriots, then won the final five singles matches to lock up the victory.
In doubles, Ylva Frafjord Landa and Johanna Selde defeated Julie Martincova and Julia Pinto 6-2 at flight three. After Francis Marion earned a win at flight two, the team of Valentina and Paulina Loretz beat Gabriel Karatantcheva and Kim Venghaus 6-3 at flight one to give Tusculum the 1-0 advantage.
The Patriots won the first completed singles match to tie the score at 1-1, but Paulina Loretz put the Pioneers on top for good as she beat Martincova 6-3, 7-5 at flight three. Landa downed Chelsea Seidewitz 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at flight two for a 3-1 Pioneer lead, and Valentina Loretz earned the clinching point with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Karatantcheva at flight one.
Tusculum closed out the match with two more singles victories, as Danielsson came from a set down for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Venghaus at flight four, and Selde defeated Pinto 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) at flight six.
