JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team competed in round-robin action this weekend at Carson-Newman University.
The Pioneers compiled an 8-3 record in singles and a 5-1 mark in doubles during the two-day event, which included the host Eagles along with the University of the Cumberlands.
In singles play, Paulina Loretz and Elodie Baechler each claimed a pair of victories. Loretz defeated Satsuki Mitani of Cumberland 6-4, 6-2 and beat Violetta Khisamova of Carson-Newman 6-4 (retired), while Baechler won 6-0, 6-2 over Cumberlands' Catherine Rae and earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Summer Reeves of Carson-Newman.
The Pioneers went 6-for-6 in singles against Cumberlands, with wins by Leonie Floeth over Johanna Beckmann 6-1, 6-3, along with Tabitha Howe by a 6-0, 6-1 score over Laura Prieto. Also winning were Valentina Loretz, who downed Karen Contreras 6-0, 6-1, and Johanna Palacio who had a 6-0, 6-1 win over Beatriz De Souza.
In doubles play, five different combinations combined to earn five victories during the weekend for the Pioneers. Valentina Loretz teamed with Palacio to defeat Khisamova and Julia Spiese of Carson-Newman 8-4, and the Pioneers won all four of their matches with Cumberlands.
Against the Patriots, Howe and Baechler beat Mikaela Fros and Beckmann 8-6, while Ylva Frafjord Landa and Paulina Loretz beat the Cumberlands duo by a 9-7 score. Floeth and Howe also teamed for an 8-3 win over Pin-Han Liu and Fan Shiau, while Baechler and Palacio won 9-8 against Mitani and Contreras.
Tusculum will close its fall schedule with a match against North Greenville on Saturday, Oct. 29 at noon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
