GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University won the decisive singles match to claim a 4-3 victory over Lincoln Memorial University Sunday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis from the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The 58th-ranked Pioneers (12-6, 7-4 SAC) nearly saw the 39th-ranked Railsplitters (16-8, 5-6 SAC) erase a 3-1 deficit in singles, but Valentina Loretz secured the victory with a 6-0, 7-5 win at flight five over Amanda Dahlstrom. Tusculum swept doubles play from the Railsplitters and had leads of 1-0 and 3-1 before Lincoln Memorial battled back to tie the match at 3-3.
In doubles, Elodie Baechler and Tabitha Howe upset 21st-ranked Julia Valls and Valentina Ascarrunz 6-4 at flight one, Valentina Loretz and Emilie Hansen beat Kushi Khandoji and Keana Moon 6-4 at flight three, and Leonie Floeth teamed with Paulina Loretz for a 7-5 win at flight two over Laura Jipescu and Samantha Hogan.
The Railsplitters tied the match at 1-1 as Khandoji defeated Hansen 6-3, 6-4 at flight six, but Tusculum went out to a 3-1 lead as Paulina Loretz beat Sophia Aray 6-3, 6-2 at flight four and Howe downed Jipescu 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at flight two. Lincoln Memorial rallied as Valls beat Baechler 6-3, 6-2 at flight one and Ascarrunz defeated Floeth 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at flight three to tie the match, but the Pioneers' Valentina Loretz secured the victory.
The Pioneers will close the regular season on Tuesday, April 12 at 3 p.m. at UVA Wise. The Cavaliers lost 6-1 to Mars Hill on Sunday to fall to 0-9 in conference play and 7-15 overall, with nine consecutive losses.
