BELMONT, N.C. --- Tusculum University earned its third consecutive victory with a 5-2 win at Belmont Abbey College in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (4-1) swept doubles from the Crusaders (2-5), then won three of the first four singles matches to claim the victory. Three of the Pioneers' four wins in singles came in straight sets, with Belmont Abbey earning both of its singles points after losing the first set.
In doubles, Elodie Baechler and Tabitha Howe beat Kayla Vaughan and Lily Aranyos 6-2 at flight one, and the sister team of Paulina Loretz and Valentina Loretz delivered the team point for the Pioneers with a 6-2 win at flight three over Paola Socarras and Daniella Galeano. At flight two, Emilie Hansen and Rory Church outlasted Frankee Hendricks and Laura Seib 7-6 (7-2) to finish the sweep.
Valentina Loretz beat Socarras 6-2, 6-1 at flight five for a 2-0 Tusculum lead, and Howe put the Pioneers within a point of the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at flight three over Elliott Peterson. After the Crusaders earned a three-set win at flight one, Paulina Loretz locked down the win with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Aranyos at flight four. Tusculum's fifth and final point came from Johanna Palacio at flight six, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Carlie Davis.
The Pioneers will return to the road on Tuesday, Feb. 22 with a visit to Lee, beginning at 2 p.m.
