17th-ranked Pioneers earn 6-1 win over shorthanded Young Harris

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team won its spring home opener on Saturday, defeating Young Harris College 6-1 in non-conference action at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 17th-ranked Pioneers (4-1) faced a Young Harris team that fielded just five players and won four of five singles contests from the Mountain Lions (5-2) for their third consecutive victory.

Tusculum needed just one win to secure the doubles point, and got it at flight two as Julia Lopez and Africa Mota defeated Jing Dong and Juli Boerr by a 6-1 score.

In singles, Emilie Hansen defeated Dong 6-0, 6-2 at flight one, Mota downed Ana Rodriguez 6-4, 7-6 at flight three, and Sarah Primik was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Catarina Marcko Ferreira at flight four. Martina Marras also claimed a win as she took a 8-3 decision from Boerr at flight five.

The Pioneers will prepare for their second ranked opponent of the spring as 10th-ranked North Georgia visits the Nichols Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 29 for a 10 a.m. match.
