Pioneers kick off season at King

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team participated in the King University Hidden Dual Tournament to open the fall portion of its 2019-20 season. The Pioneers faced off with King, Montreat and UVa-Wise during the event.

Freshmen Darina Mueller and Rory Church had strong collegiate debuts for the Pioneers with three singles victories apiece, while senior Julia Lopez, junior Javiera Ortiz and sophomore Martina Marras each had a pair of singles wins.

Mueller beat Lauren Smorgonsky of King 6-0, 6-1, defeated Sophia Rojas Osorio of Montreat 6-4, 6-4 and downed Katya Akimenko of UVa-Wise 6-4, 2-6, (10-5). Church earned wins over Murphy Harr of King by a 6-0, 6-2 score, won 6-0, 6-0 over Kali Zakariasen of Montreat and over Megan Harwood of UVa-Wise 6-2, 6-2. Lopez had a 6-2, 6-2 win over Anna Mincey of King and a 6-0, 6-1 victory aginst Grace Hall of UVa-Wise, and Marras won 6-4, 6-1 agaist Morgan Buchanan of King and 2-6, 6-3, (10-6) against Annika Becmann of Montreat. Ortiz earned a 6-2, 6-2 win against Elizabeth Beary of Montreat and took a 6-1, 6-0 win over Olivia Dishner of UVa-Wise.

Also picking up wins for the Pioneers were Caitlin McCullough, who beat Marylin Roustand of King 6-1 (retired), Africa Mota who won 6-0, 6-2 against Isla Bell of King, and Emilie Hansen who had a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 win over Sophia Hernandez Mera of Montreat.

In doubles, the pairing of Ortiz and Church won both of its matches, defeating Mincey and Buchanan of King 6-3 and downing Aiden Betz and Zakariasen of Montreat by a 6-2 score. Ortiz also teamed with Lopez for a 6-2 win over Dishner and Lillian Morris of UVa-Wise. Hansen had three doubles wins for the Pioneers, combining with McCullough to defeat the King duo of Roustand and Smorgonsky 6-1, then teaming with Marras for a 6-1 win over Beary and Beckmann of Montreat and a 6-0 victory over Hall and Harwood of UVa-Wise.

Other doubles wins came from Mueller and Lopez, who beat Bell and Harr of King by a 6-0 score, and Lopez and Mota who combined for a 6-1 win over Mera and Osorio of Montreat.

The Pioneers will host King in their lone dual match of the fall season on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
