Pioneers defeat Lee 6-1

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University defeated Lee University 6-1 in non-conference women's tennis action at the Nichols Tennis Complex Wednesday afternoon.

The Pioneers (4-2) won two out of three doubles matches to earn the team point, then won three singles matches in straight sets to pick up victory over the Flames (4-2).

In doubles, Annie McCullough and Caitlin McCullough beat Asia Grzegrzolka and Micaela Belen Maiz 7-5 at flight one, and Julia Lopez and Africa Mota defeated Carley Sickinger and Francesca Tondi 6-4 at flight two.

In singles play, Tusculum caught a break at flight one as Tondi was forced to retire while leading Emilie Hansen 6-0, 1-0, giving the point to the Pioneers. Annie McCullough defeated Sickinger 6-3, 6-2 at flight two and Caitlin McCullough won 6-2, 6-2 over Grzegrzolka at flight three to clinch the match for the Pioneers.

Lopez won 7-5, 6-2 over Lisa Kirr at flight four, and Martina Marras won in a pro set over Lauren Trammell by a score of 8-4 at flight six.

Tusculum will host Anderson in their South Atlantic Conference season opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
