ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum advanced in the SAC Women's Tennis Championship tournament with a 5-0 victory over Newberry in quarterfinal action Thursday afternoon at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

The third-seeded Pioneers (18-6) will face second-seeded Queens in the semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m., while the sixth-seeded Wolves saw their season end with a record of 15-10.

Tusculum swept doubles from Newberry, starting at flight one where the first-team All-Conference duo of Katarina Majorova and Franziska Funke beat Elizabeth Williamson and Amanda Carrillo by a score of 8-2. Brittani Brooks and Amber Lackey gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead with an 8-4 win over Marta Gomar and Rebeca Martinez at flight three, followed at flight two by Annie McCullough and Jule Brass who got past Lucia Davis and Kelly McManus by a 9-7 score.

The Pioneers won the first set in three of the first five singles matches, and finished off the sweep as Funke downed Carrillo 6-2, 6-3 at flight two followed by Africa Mota who won 6-0, 6-3 at flight four over Lucia Davis to clinch the victory.

Tusculum is seeking its fourth SAC Championship tournament title all-time and second in the last four years, while Queens is the defending tournament champion. The Royals defeated the Pioneers 7-2 in their regular-season meeting on April 1 in Charlotte. The winner will advance to Saturday's tournament championship match.

Anderson will face top-seeded Wingate in the other semifinal match on Friday, after the Trojans defeated Carson-Newman by a score of 5-2 in Thursday's quarterfinal matchup.
