CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Tusculum women's tennis team closed out its regular-season schedule on Friday with a 5-1 win over Southern Wesleyan in non-conference action on the campus of Western Carolina University.
The 39th-ranked Pioneers (17-6) won two out of three doubles matches with the Warriors (10-7) and won the first three singles matches to clinch the victory.
In doubles, Brittani Brooks and Amber Lackey defeated Aimee Dorley and Kristi Cooper 8-2 at flight two, while Jule Brass and Africa Mota won 8-3 at flight three against Chyna Jones and Elizabeth Mulkey.
In singles, Katarina Majorova won 6-0, 6-1 at flight one against Jennifer Ball, Franziska Funke won 6-0, 6-3 at flight two against Dorley, and Brass shut out Mulkey 6-0, 6-0 at flight six to clinch the match. Both Brooks and Lackey were up a set and on their way to victory in their respective singles matches when the Pioneers clinched the win.
Tusculum also competed in an exhibition match against the host Catamounts and lost by a score of 4-3. Majorova, Funke and Annie McCullough had straight-set singles wins for the Pioneers, while Funke and Majorova were victorious in doubles as well.
The Pioneers will begin preparation for the South Atlantic Conference Championships which get underway Thursday with first-round action in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The semifinal matches will be Friday with the championship match next Saturday.
