WINGATE, N.C. --- Wingate rallied from a 4-2 deficit to defeat Tusculum 5-4 in a South Atlantic Conference women's tennis matchup Sunday afternoon.
The 33rd-ranked Bulldogs (15-2, 11-0 SAC) finished off a perfect conference schedule and won their seventh straight SAC championship by defeating the 39th-ranked Pioneers (14-6, 8-2 SAC), who had won two out of three in doubles and two of the first three singles matches.
Tusculum took a 2-1 lead in doubles as Franziska Funke and Katarina Majorova defeated Oroma Womeodu and Maria Garcia 8-5 at flight one, and Annie McCullough teamed with Jule Brass for an 8-3 victory over Andrea Ternera and Sydney Homan at flight two.
In singles, Majorova beat Claudia DeAndreis 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at flight one and Funke downed Ternera 6-4, 6-1 as the Pioneers went on top 4-2. However, the Bulldogs claimed victories at flights three, five and six to erase the deficit and earn the victory.
The Pioneers return to action Tuesday afternoon when they host North Greenville in a non-conference match at the Nichols Tennis Complex, starting at 1 p.m.
