GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- 39th-ranked Tusculum won its ninth consecutive match Saturday with an 8-1 victory over Newberry in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
The Pioneers (12-3, 7-0 SAC) swept doubles and took three of the four contested singles matches from the Wolves (12-7, 4-3 SAC) to remain one of two teams unbeaten in conference play.
Tusculum jumped to a 3-0 lead in doubles as Katarina Majorova and Franziska Funke, ranked eighth in the Southeast Region by the ITA, defeated Elizabeth Williamson and Amanda Carrillo 8-4 at flight one. At flight two, Annie McCullough and Jule Brass beat Kelly McManus and Lucia Davis 8-3, while Brittani Brooks and Amber Lackey posted an 8-4 win over Marta Gomar and Rebeca Martinez at flight three.
In singles, Funke downed Carrillo 6-0, 6-1 at flight two, McCullough defeated Gomar 6-2, 6-1 at flight three and Africa Mota won 5-7, 7-5, (10-8) at flight four over Davia. Brooks and Lackey won their singles matches by default.
Tusculum will face nationally-ranked opponents on the road in each of their next three matches, starting Tuesday with a showdown against SAC rival and fellow conference unbeaten Wingate. The Bulldogs are 6-0 in the conference and ranked 33rd nationally by the ITA in the latest survey.
