Four members of the Tusculum College Women's tennis team were
honored by the South Atlantic Conference Wednesday by being named
to the All-Conference team. Sophomore Franziska Funke and seniors
Kealee Heffner and Emily Waters were recognized in singles, while
the team of Heffner and senior Erin Mills received honors in
doubles.
The quartet helped the Pioneers compile a 19-4 overall record and
capture second place in the SAC with a 10-1 league mark. Tusculum
has received a bye into the SAC Tournament semifinals and will
begin play Friday morning.
Heffner, who was named first-team All-Conference last season as
well, went 11-8 overall for the Pioneers and 6-5 in conference
matches while playing at the number-one position in the lineup.
Heffner's record included a straight-set win over conference Player
of the Year Carlotta Nassi of Queens, one of 10 victories that came
in straight sets for Heffner. In three seasons with the Pioneers
after transferring from Mercer, the Cumming, Georgia product has
compiled a 46-14 record in singles including a 23-12 mark at the
top of the lineup.
Funke joined Heffner on first-team singles after she put together a
21-1 record for the Pioneers, which featured 16 victories in 17
matches at the number-two spot in the lineup. Her only loss came in
three sets in a match against Division I Western Carolina, and the
native of Bochum, Germany finished the regular season by defeating
the 50th-ranked player in the NAIA in a match against Georgia
Gwinnett. Funke, who was named honorable mention All-SAC last
season, has a two-year record of 35-2 for the Pioneers and is 21-1
in conference matches.
Waters was recognized as honorable mention by the conference after
going 17-2 overall for the Pioneers, with a perfect 9-0 mark in SAC
matches. The Canton, Georgia product was taken to a third set just
once, and had a stretch during the season in which she lost a total
of seven games in a five-match span. Waters has a career 45-8
singles record for the Pioneers, which includes a 17-3 mark at
number four and 24-4 at number six in the lineup.
Heffner and Mills were chosen second-team All-Conference in doubles
following a regular season in which they went 17-3 overall,
including 13-1 at number two in the lineup. The duo finished 10-1
in conference matches and enjoyed an 11-match winning streak
through the middle part of the schedule. Mills, who hails from
Duluth, Georgia, was honorable mention in doubles in 2014.
Joining Nassi as award winners from the conference were Freshman of
the Year Claudia De Andreis of Wingate and Coach of the Year
Michael Cabana of Wingate, who led his team to a perfect 11-0
record and the SAC championship.
The Pioneers will face either Queens or Coker in the SAC Tournament
semifinals, which will be played Friday morning at 9 a.m. at
Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina. The Pioneers have won
two previous SAC Tournament titles, including their most-recent
championship in 2014.
