NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Tusculum College women's
tennis team recorded its fourth win in as many days as the
44th-ranked Pioneers defeated host Newberry College 6-3 Tuesday
afternoon at the Cannons Courts.
Tusculum (15-3, 7-1 SAC) swept the three doubles matches and picked
up straight-set wins from Franziska Funke, Adrienne Kaye and Emily
Waters to secure the league victory.
Kaye and No. 3 doubles partner Emily Waters picked up an 8-4 pro set win over the Newberry duo of Kelly McManus and Paula Avellan. Kaye clinched the deciding point of the match with her 6-0, 6-0 singles victory over Tara Lamers at the No. 4 flight.
The Wolves (15-4, 7-2 SAC) picked up three singles points, including one at the top flight in a battle of regionally ranked players. Newberry's Elizabeth Williamson, the 25th-ranked singles player in NCAA Division II, rallied from a set down to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 over Tusculum senior Kealee Heffner, who is ranked 15th in the Southeast Region.
Heffner and Mills ran their impressive doubles worksheet to 14-1 (8-0 SAC) with their 8-3 win over Newberry's Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo. Funke and Sumner were also victorious over Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers, 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
With the victory, the Pioneers have secured their fifth straight 15-win campaign. TC has won 15 or more match in 14 of the last 15 seasons.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday as they travel to Harrogate, Tennessee to take on in-state foe Lincoln Memorial University for a 2 p.m. SAC match.
