--- The Tusculum College Women's tennis team defeated
19th-ranked Northwood University 6-3 Tuesday morning in
non-conference action.
The 47th-ranked Pioneers (8-1) defeated their highest-ranked
Division II opponent in program history and snapped the 12-match
winning streak of the Timberwolves (14-2), who won the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship in the
fall. The highest-ranked opponent that Tusculum previously defeated
was 28th-ranked Queens on April 4 of last season.
The Pioneers trailed 2-1 after doubles, as the team of Adrienne
Kaye and Emily Waters picked up a point at flight three with an 8-6
win over Anastasiia Kazub and Olesia Riabchuk.
In singles, the Pioneers won five of the six points to rally for
the match victory. Kealee Heffner defeated Riabchuk 6-2, 6-3 at
flight one, Franziska Funke beat Kazub 6-4, 6-3 at flight two, and
Erin Mills downed Anna Aniskina 7-5, 6-3 at flight three. At flight
five, Kaye beat Maria Avksenenko 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5 tiebreak)
while Waters won by default at flight six.
The Pioneers will conclude Spring Break action at Hilton Head on
Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. against Kutztown.
