MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. ---The Tusculum College Women's tennis team defeated Milligan College 9-0 Sunday afternoon in the completion of a match that was suspended Feb. 20 due to rain.
The 47th-ranked Pioneers improved to 7-0, with six of their seven wins coming by sweep. The Buffs suffered their first loss of the season and fell to 5-1.
At the time of the suspension, Tusculum led 2-0 behind wins from Erin Mills and Kealee Heffner at flight two doubles by an 8-0 score over Martha Wells and Kate Booker, while the team of Emily Waters and Adrienne Kaye beat Lexie Hill and Abigail Allen 8-1 at flight three.
The Pioneers' number-one team of Franziska Funke and Sarah Baker went on to defeat the Buffs' Rachel Hodas and Caroline Morelli by a score of 8-3, after leading 5-3 at the time the match was halted.
In singles action, the Pioneers won five of the six matches in straight sets. Heffner beat Hodas 6-1, 6-0 at flight one, Funke swept Wells 6-0, 6-0 at flight two and Mills beat Morelli 6-0, 6-2 at flight three.
At flight four, Kaye beat Booker 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, while Baker downed Allen 6-0, 6-3 at flight five and Waters won over Hill at flight six by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
The Pioneers will return to action Tuesday afternoon with a South Atlantic Conference match at Carson-Newman, beginning at 2 p.m.
