Tommy Arnett grabs SAC Co-Coach of the Year honors

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Three members of the Tusculum College Women's tennis team have been selected to the All-South Atlantic Conference team, as voted upon by the league's 12 head coaches and released Tuesday by the conference office.

In addition, head coach Tommy Arnett was recognized by his peers as SAC Co-Coach of the Year after leading the Pioneers to a 20-2 overall record and second place in the conference with a 10-1 league mark. It is the second time in his career that he has received Women's tennis Coach of the Year honors, with the first time coming in 2004. In 13 seasons as head Women's coach at Tusculum, Arnett has a 217-60 record for a .783 winning percentage.

Earning honorable mention All-Conference recognition for the Pioneers were Kate Hutchinson in singles along with the doubles team of Erin Mills and Adrienne Kaye, after they helped pace the Pioneers to 14 straight wins at midseason and a bye into Thursday's Food Lion SAC Tournament semifinals.

Hutchinson played number-three singles for the Pioneers and put together an 18-2 overall record, including a 10-1 mark in conference play. She won 13 straight matches at one point during the year, and went 3-0 in third sets for the Pioneers.

The Calhoun, Ga. native is the lone upperclassman in the Pioneer lineup and has a three-year singles record of 41-15 while starting at three different spots in the Tusculum lineup.

Mills and Kaye teamed up for a 16-3 overall record during the season, including a 9-2 record in conference matches. The sophomores played at the number-two spot in the Pioneer lineup and opened the season with 15 straight victories.

As a team, Mills (Duluth, Ga.) and Kaye (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) won 10 matches in which they allowed two games or fewer to their opponents, including a streak where they had three straight shutout victories.

Queens swept the major player awards as Christina Rustscheff was named Player of the Year and Melissa Laing was Freshman of the Year. Wingate head coach Michael Cabana shared the Coach of the Year award with Arnett, marking the fourth straight year he has claimed at least a share of the honor.

Tusculum will play either Queens or Mars Hill in the semifinals of the Food Lion SAC Tournament on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
