Tusculum College prepared for Tuesday's showdown for the lead in
the South Atlantic Conference with a 7-2 win over Brevard College
in a SAC Women's tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Nichols
Tennis Complex.
The Pioneers (17-1, 8-0 SAC) won their 14th straight match on
Sunday and will host nationally-ranked Wingate on Tuesday afternoon
for sole possession of first place in the conference. The Bulldogs
will bring a 9-0 league record into Tuesday's match against the
Pioneers.
Just as it has in its previous 13 wins, Tusculum took the lead in
doubles and used strong performances at the bottom of the lineup to
claim the win over the Tornados (4-10, 1-7 SAC). The Pioneers have
outscored their conference opponents by a 54-18 margin through
their first eight league contests.
In doubles play, Kate Hutchinson and Kealee Heffner beat Katie
Daugherty and Michelle Prata 8-6 at flight one, Erin Mills and
Adrienne Kaye pushed their record to 15-0 by defeating Nirvanna
Silva and Claudia Hellman 8-1 at flight two, and at flight three
Emily Waters and Amanda Sumner moved to 15-1 with an 8-3 victory
over Jule Hermann and Ana Drummond.
In singles, the Tornados got wins from Daugherty and Prata at the
top two flights to pull within 3-2, but Hutchinson defeated Hermann
6-2, 6-3 at flight three for her 13th straight win to give the
Pioneers a 4-2 lead. Heffner won her 11th in a row and clinched the
match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hellman at flight four, Kaye
improved to 18-0 by beating Silva 6-2, 6-3 at flight five, and
Waters downed Drummond 6-0, 6-0 at flight six to wrap up the
victory.
Match time against Wingate on Tuesday is scheduled for 12 noon.
