
Tusculum College finished off an undefeated March with a 6-3
victory over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference Women's
tennis action Sunday afternoon at Newberry High School.
The Pioneers (14-1, 5-0 SAC) ran their winning streak to 11
straight matches by sweeping the final four singles contests after
falling behind 3-2 to the Wolves (10-5, 6-2 SAC). The 11 wins in a
row are the longest for the Pioneers since claiming 12 consecutive
victories during the 2012 season.
Tusculum grabbed an early 2-1 lead in doubles as Erin Mills and
Adrienne Kaye stayed undefeated at 12-0 with an 8-3 win at flight
two over Vanessa Ortiz and Marina Ziehe. Amanda Sumner and Emily
Waters also stayed perfect for the season at 13-0 as they held on
for an 8-5 win over Ariel Strong and Tara Lamers at flight three.
Newberry's point came at flight one from the regionally-ranked duo
of Susana Aguirre and Romina Adum by a score of 8-5.
In singles, Aguirre beat Mills 6-3, 6-4 at flight one and Adum
downed Sarah Baker 6-2, 6-2 at flight two for a 3-2 Wolves lead.
However, Kate Hutchinson tied the score at 3-3 with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3
triumph over Ortiz at flight three and Kealee Heffner put the
Pioneers on top with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lamers at flight four.
Kaye clinched the win and improved to 15-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph
over Strong at flight five, and Sumner downed Ziehe 6-2, 6-2 at
flight six to close out the match and stay undefeated at 8-0.
The Pioneers will return to the court on Tuesday afternoon at 1
p.m. with a SAC match at Carson-Newman.
