The Tusculum College Women's tennis team clinched the second
seed in next week's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament
with a 6-3 victory over Brevard College Tuesday afternoon at the
Nichols Tennis Complex.
The Pioneers (15-3, 7-1 SAC) claimed two points by forfeit over the
five-player Tornados (3-12, 1-6 SAC), but needed singles wins from
Erin Mills, Emily Waters and Megan Buckmaster to lock up the win.
As the second seed, Tusculum will have a bye into the conference
semifinals next Friday at Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Tusculum took a 2-1 lead out of doubles action as Mills and Taylor
Patterson defeated Elise Labus and Katie Ouellette 8-2 at flight
two. Wins from Brevard's Claire Dillman and Michelle Prata, both in
singles and as a doubles team, helped the Tornados pull within 4-3
with two matches remaining.
With a 6-1, 6-0 win by Mills over Ouellette at flight three the
difference in the match, the Pioneers turned to Waters and
Buckmaster to lock up the win. Waters provided the clinching point
with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Labus at flight four, and Buckmaster
defeated Nirvana Silva 6-1, 6-2 at flight five in the final match
of the afternoon.
The Pioneers will play their final regular-season conference match
on Friday at 2 p.m. against Lincoln Memorial at the Nichols Tennis
Complex.
