Tusculum College erased a 2-1 deficit by winning five of six
singles matches to defeat Newberry College 6-3 in a South Atlantic
Conference Women's tennis match Thursday afternoon.
The Pioneers (13-1, 4-0 SAC) posted their 12th win in a row and
remained unbeaten in conference play heading into Saturday's
showdown with fellow unbeaten Anderson.
Tusculum was aided by the fact that the Wolves (13-8, 4-3 SAC) had
only five players available for the match, forcing Newberry to
default at flight six singles and flight three doubles. The
Pioneers won four of the seven contested matches to lock up their
12th straight victory.
In singles play, reigning SAC Player of the Week Holly Verner won
her seventh straight match by a score of 6-2, 6-2 at flight one
over Ariel Strong, while at flight three Courtney Conley downed
Romina Adum 7-6, 6-3. Taylor Patterson downed Marina Ziehe 6-1, 6-1
at flight four and Kate Hutchinson shut out Shannon McManus 6-0,
6-0 at flight five to boost her record to 11-0 in singles.
Megan Buckmaster was the beneficiary of the defaults by the Wolves,
winning uncontested at flight six of singles and at flight three of
doubles with Hutchinson, the lone doubles point earned by the
Pioneers.
Saturday's match with Anderson, which is 7-0 in the SAC this
season, begins at 1 p.m. from Anderson, S.C.
