Tusculum College freshman Holly Verner was named the South
Atlantic Conference Player of the Week in Women's tennis for the
week ending March 25, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Verner (Del Mar, Calif.), who earned SAC Player of the Week honors
for the second time this season, boosted her singles winning streak
to five straight matches with three wins last week, and added three
doubles victories as Tusculum extended its team win streak to 10 in
a row.
Playing at #1 singles, Verner lost a total of five games in her
three singles matches, taking a 6-2, 6-0 win over Virginia-Wise, a
6-0, 6-1 triumph at Carson-Newman and a 6-2, 6-0 victory over
Catawba. She also added three doubles victories with partner
Katelyn Doss, losing just seven games in three victories.
Overall, the freshman is 11-2 in both singles and doubles while
playing out of the #1 position, helping the Pioneers to a 12-1
overall record and a 3-0 mark in the SAC.
Tusculum, which defeated Wingate 5-4 on Monday for its 11th
consecutive win, will be back in action Thursday afternoon at
Newberry, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
