
Tusculum College won the final three singles matches to break a
3-3 tie and defeat Carson-Newman 6-3 in South Atlantic Conference
Women's tennis action Thursday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis
Complex.
The Pioneers (9-4, 3-1 SAC) helped head coach Tommy Arnett earn his
301st victory at Tusculum shortly after the men finished off a 7-2
victory over the Eagles for the 300th combined win in Arnett's 10
years as head coach. Carson-Newman fell to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in
the SAC with the loss.
Tusculum took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, with Courtney Conley
and Taylor Patterson picking up an 8-1 win over Kylie Elliott and
Taryn Cappadona at flight one and Megan Buckmaster and Blake
Thompson earning an 8-5 victory at flight three over Katie Brown
and Megan Wilson. At flight two, the Eagles grabbed a point behind
Stefy Stand and Stephanie Goode, who defeated Kristen Keefer and
Katie Hillis 8-5.
Carson-Newman evened the match in the top half of singles, behind a
6-2, 6-1 win by Stand over Buckmaster at flight three and a 7-5,
6-4 victory at flight two by Cappadona over Patterson. Conley
evened the match at flight one by rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win
over Elliott.
Tusculum regained the lead at 4-3 when Keefer defeated Brown 6-2,
6-1 at flight four and clinched the win shortly after when Hillis
finished off a 6-2, 6-3 victory at flight six over Wilson. Thompson
added the final point by defeating Goode 6-1, 6-4 at flight
five.
The Pioneers remain home this weekend, hosting Lincoln Memorial on
Saturday at 1 p.m.
